New Study Declares Limited Male Breast Cancer Awareness Costs Lives

In a recent study published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, men have later onset of breast cancer and more advanced stages of the disease than their female counterparts. Survival rates of men when their breast cancer is caught at the same stage as women are actually higher, but researchers believe that it is due to a lack of awareness of male breast cancer that men's cancer is being caught in later stages. October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM) organization is dedicated to increasing the awareness of the importance of early detection of breast cancer. 10 Tips for Breast Cancer Patients During Treatment

Throughout October, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, experts from Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and its clinical partner, the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, are offering a series of weekly research-based tip sheets regarding a variety of topics related to breast cancer, including breast cancer prevention, screening and early detection, treatment and survivorship.
Today's tip sheet is "10 Tips for Breast Cancer Patients During Treatment", provided by Julie Gralow, M.D. Dr. Gralow is the Director of Breast Medical Oncology at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance. The site also provides links to the prior weeks tip sheets as well.

New Studies show Mammograms Reduce Breast Cancer Deaths

As reported on the American Cancer Society's web site, two recent studies show that regular screening mammograms help reduce deaths from breast cancer. Differing in their methodologies and specific findings, both studies ultimately support the American Cancer Society's recommendation that women receive regular mammograms as an important part of a breast cancer screening plan. October 1st marks the beginning of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. October as an awareness month has grown in to a global health campaign. Breast cancer charities from all over the world organize efforts to increase awareness of the disease as well as fundraising events to help raise funds for research into it's cause, prevention and cure.
