New Potential Way to Spot Hard to Detect Ovarian Cancer

Kevin Anderson - Tuesday, September 20, 2011
Researchers from the University of Connecticut and the University of Southern California have submitted a new way to detect ovarian cancer. While the current standard procedure is preemptively removing the ovaries, researchers propose that their new device, which combines photoacoustic imaging, high resolution subsurface imaging, and pulse echo ultrasound can detect ovarian cancer with minimally invasive surgery. The device could be inserted into a small slit in live tissue in order to image patients. For more information, please click here.

Stopping Brain Cancer From Feeding on Cholesterol Could Be A New Treatment

Kevin Anderson - Tuesday, September 20, 2011
Researchers have potentially found a new way of treating glioblastoma, by starving the cancer cells of cholesterol. Glioblastoma is one of the most deadly types of brain cancer, with about 18,000 people a year being diagnosed, and about 13,000 dying from the disease annually. Tumors are extremely hard to remove with surgery, because they invade surrounding brain tissue, and can be resistant to chemotherapy, because some people have genes that cause them to be resistant.
