Adding radiation therapy to treatment with women with early breast cancer who have had breast conserving surgery lessens the chance of the cancer recurring. At the end of the five year study, patients having radiation therapy in addition to the breast lumpectomy had a 41% lower rate of recurrence in the breast and a 36% lower rate of recurrence in the rest of the body. In a press release by Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Northwestern Medicine Physicians are currently using a new treatment option for breast cancer that allows women to receive a full dose of radiation therapy during breast conserving surgery. This new treatment option allows women to receive the full amount of radiation therapy during surgery, normally taking six weeks. This allows for a minimal impact on the patient's daily life.
